Holy Family Nursery Admissions Criteria


Details of the respective functions of the Board of Governors and the Principal in relation to admission to the school.

The Board of Governors together with the Principal will formulate and review the criteria. The Principal will administer the criteria.  He will consult with the Board of Governors or a duly appointed sub-committee of the Board of Governors should the need arise. The Board of Governors has the final decision in all matters relating to admissions.

Admissions criteria to be used in the event of the school being oversubscribed. The criteria are listed in order of priority.

The statutory criteria set out in Section 3.5 (a) will be applied to all valid applications received on the official application form. The criteria will be applied according to the procedures detailed in Section 3.

In the event of the enrolment number being exceeded on the application of a statutory criterion the sub-criteria set out below will be applied in the order indicated.

Children who are recorded on the Magherafelt Parish register as belonging to the parish of Magherafelt.

Children whose application form names Holy Family Nursery Unit as first preference  will be given priority. Remaining places will be allocated on the basis of preference i.e. second preference will be admitted before third preference etc.

Children with brother(s)/sister(s)/half-brother(s)/half-sister(s) presently enrolled in Holy Family PS.

Children currently on the “At Risk” register maintained by the Magherafelt Trust.

Children  who,  in the opinion of the Board of Governors, have special home circumstances considered in the following order:

(a)  a child who has one or both parents deceased;

(b)  child whose parent has a serious long term illness (medical evidence required);

(c)  children who are twins (or other multiple births);

(d)  child from a family of three or more pre-school age children.

Children whose parent(s)/guardian(s) is/are currently a permanent employee in the school.

The first child or the only child in the family.

Children will be selected on the basis of the initial letter of their surname as entered on their Birth Certificate in the order set out in this randomly generated order of letters.

In the event of surnames beginning with the same initial letter the subsequent letters of the surname will be used in alphabetical order. In the event of two identical surnames, the alphabetical order of the initials of the forenames will be used.

Criteria for children not in their final pre-school year

Should places remain after the application of the above criteria to children in their final preschool year, places will be allocated strictly in accordance with chronological age beginning with the eldest child.

In the event of children with the same date of birth being considered for the final place the school’s sub-criteria will be applied.

When considering which children should be selected for admission, the Board of Governors will only take into account information which is detailed on or attached to the application form. Parents should therefore ensure that all information pertaining to their child and relevant to the school’s admissions criteria is stated on the application form or attached to it.
