Today our Primary 7 pupils took part in a Smokebusters Zoom meeting delivered by Cancer Focus NI. This workshop aimed to equip our pupils with the knowledge and skills to resist the temptation to smoke when they get older. Children had the opportunity to act as role-models and were encouraged to use information about the dangers of smoking to get others to stop.
Everyone watched video clips which demonstrated the skills they will need to help resist peer pressure to smoke and role play scenarios are organised to help them practise these in the safety of the classroom. They were able to use strategies like distraction and avoidance to maintain self-control. Pupils were shocked to discover what was in cigarettes and realise the importance of standing firm in saying 'No' to smoking.
